wedding rings

Wedding and betrothal rings – the pledges of love – have always appealed to our imaginations, emotions and yearnings. Long ago, our ancestors accepted the ring as an emblem of eternity and a symbol indicative of steadfast devotion – an interpretation quite contrary to Samuel Johnson’s brusque definition of “a circular instrument placed upon the noses of hogs and the fingers of women to restrain them and bring them into subjection.”The habit of wearing the wedding symbol on the fourth finger of the left hand is based upon a Grecian fable that the artery from that finger flows directly to the heart. Science discredits this theory. During the Elizabethan era, fancy decreed that the ring be worn on the thumb. Use of the wedding symbol was known in Egyptian culture, and it is mentioned in the hieroglvnhics on walls of tombs archaeologists record. Generally the circlets are heavy metal, encrusted with precious or semi-precious stones. However, the average Roman citizen is reputed to have found “ugly metal bands” sufficient: Smallest wedding circlet is believed that made when Princess Mary, daughter of King Henry VIII was espoused of the dolphin of France of King Francis I. The ceremony was performed Oct. 5, 1518. The princess was two years of age, and her spouse was born Feb. 28, 1518. The ring came into use in Christian ceremonies about 870, authorities state, and was in use in biblical times by the Hebrews. Though fashion decreed trends towards narrow bands and introduced other whimsies, the gypsy always has held firm to tradition. The broadness and weight of the golden tie decrees and denotes the position of the gypsy couple in the tribe. The bigger and heavier the circlet, the bigger and better the standing of the wedded pair.

black diamonds

Black diamonds are the rarest in the diamond family. Also called carbonado, black diamonds were created 3.5 billion years ago. Over time, they pushed their way up to the surface through volcanic eruptions about 1 million years ago. Black diamonds are considered to be young  as clear diamonds were formed approximately 4.25 billion years ago.

Black Diamonds are just as hard as clear diamonds, and Brazil is the major supplier of black diamonds. Uniformity of color is quite uncommon, as most black diamonds appear gray and dark gray, and the surface of the diamond is pitted, which makes cutting challenging.

In Italy fighting couples could save their marriage simply by touching the stone, as it was believed that all of their troubles would leave them and enter the stone. The Karloff Noir diamond is believed to be the world’s largest cut black diamond at 88 carats, and legend has it that when touched, it endows the person with good luck, fortune and happiness.

men wearing earrings

The tradition of men wearing earrings dates  far back in our ancestry to primitive Indian tribes. Facial piercings and jewelry were used as tools to modify the bodies in religious and cultural initiations and rituals. For many of these primitive Indian tribes, body modification is a symbol of age, status, wealth and standing within the tribe that is still used even today. In the 1920s, it became popular for sailors to pierce their ears based on superstition. Sailors believed that if their bodies were recovered after a sailing accident that the person would take the earring as payment for a proper burial, but pierced ears on sailors also represented a sailor who had sailed around the world or survived a sinking ship. Modern body modification has taken on a more literal sense of vanity. In the late 1960s and early 70s, hippies and homosexuals adopted the wearing of earrings  and the taboo quickly turned into a fad, catching on in the celebrity community, with punk rocks bands and athletes beginning to pierce their ears as well.

magical properties of Blue Topaz

Blue Topaz was considered by ancient civilizations to have cooling properties.  Not only was it believed to cool boiling water when thrown into the pot, but to calm hot tempers as well!  This gemstone was credited with many other healing powers, among them the ability to cure insanity, asthma, weak vision and insomnia.  The Blue Topaz  was even thought to have magical properties in its ability to make its wearer invisible in a threatening situation.

Blue Topaz is the hardest of the silicate minerals.  While pure Topaz is colorless, minor changes of elements within the stone result in a variety of other colors, such as blue, pale green, red, yellow and pink.

The blue hue is created when Topaz is heated, whether the heat source is natural or engineered by man.  The three shades of Blue Topaz are Sky, Swiss and London Blue.  The latter is the deepest blue and is often used as a less expensive substitute for Sapphire.

Topaz is found primarily in Brazil, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Pakistan, China, and the United States.

A gift of Blue Topaz  is symbolic of love and fidelity.  Luckily, this cool blue gemstone has no legendary power to put out the burning flame of love!
